How to Customise Your QR Code Design — Colors, Dots, Logos and Frames

QR codes do not have to be boring black squares. This guide walks through every customisation option in QR Maker.

Why design matters

A well-designed QR code gets scanned more. Studies consistently show that QR codes with brand colors and a logo have higher scan rates than plain black-and-white codes. A branded QR code also looks intentional and trustworthy rather than something that was thrown together.

The #1 rule: contrast

Before touching any design option, understand this rule: the foreground (dots) must be significantly darker than the background. Dark on light works. Light on dark technically works but is less universally supported. Light on light or dark on dark will fail to scan reliably.

If you use a brand color for the dots, make sure it is dark enough against the background. Test scan after every significant color change.

Dot styles

The individual squares that make up the QR code pattern can be changed to different shapes:

  • Square — the classic look. Most universally recognised as a QR code.
  • Rounded — slightly rounded corners. Softer and more modern feeling.
  • Dots — circular dots instead of squares. Very clean and contemporary.
  • Classy — a more sophisticated, angular variation.

Adding a logo

A logo in the centre of your QR code makes it instantly recognisable as yours. To add one:

  • Click the Logo tab in the style panel
  • Upload a PNG or SVG file (transparent background works best)
  • Adjust the logo size — keep it under 30% of the total QR code area
  • Always set error correction to H (High) when using a logo
