6 dot styles explained

Every style has a personality. Pick the one that fits your brand — they all scan.

Dots

Perfect circles for each module. The most popular alternative to square QR codes — modern, friendly, and approachable. Great for lifestyle brands, apps, and consumer products.

Consumer brandsMobile appsLifestyle productsFood & beverage

Rounded

Square modules with softly rounded corners. Subtler than full dots — maintains the structural look of a classic QR code while feeling more refined and premium.

Professional servicesSaaS productsFinancial brandsHealthcare

Soft

Lozenge-shaped modules with more horizontal rounding. Creates a flowing, organic texture across the code — distinctive and eye-catching on printed packaging.

Beauty & wellnessHospitalityEventsPremium packaging

Pill

Capsule-shaped modules that are wider than they are tall. Bold and highly distinctive — makes your QR code an unmistakable design element rather than an afterthought.

Classy

Angular modules with a notched corner effect. Sophisticated and architectural — suits luxury brands, financial institutions, and any context where elegance matters.

Square

The original. Sharp square modules deliver the highest scan reliability in all conditions. Best for industrial use, safety-critical applications, and small print sizes.

How it works

Create a dotted QR code in 5 steps

1

Open the QR generator

Go to the QR Maker generator and select your content type — URL, Wi-Fi, contact card, event, or any of the 18 QR types.

2

Open the Style panel

Click the "Style" tab. Under Dot Style, pick Dots, Rounded, Soft, Pill, or Classy from the visual selector.

3

Choose corner style

Under Corner Style, independently pick the corner square and corner dot shape to complement your module style.

4

Apply colors & logo

Set your brand color, add a gradient if desired, and upload your logo. The live safety badge confirms the code is scannable.

5

Download your design

Export as SVG for print-ready vector output or PNG for digital use. Pro users get transparent backgrounds and high-res up to 4000px.

FAQ

Dotted QR code questions

Are dotted QR codes as reliable as square QR codes?
Yes — when the contrast is correct. QR decoder algorithms look at luminance contrast, not the exact shape of each module. Dotted, rounded, and pill styles all scan reliably as long as the contrast ratio between modules and background is at least 3:1 (we recommend 4.5:1 for print). QR Maker validates this live with a green/yellow/red safety badge.
Which dot style is best for logos?
The "Dots" (circular) style pairs most naturally with logos because its organic curves contrast well with the logo and draw the eye in. Enable H-level error correction and keep the logo under 30% of the code area.
Can I mix different dot and corner styles?
Yes. QR Maker lets you independently control the inner module dot style and both corner elements (the large corner squares and the small corner dots inside them). This means you can have circular dots with rounded corners, or pill modules with dot corners — many distinct combinations.
Do dotted QR codes work at very small print sizes?
Square dots perform best at small sizes (under 1.5 inches) because they preserve more module area. Dotted and pill styles have slightly more whitespace between modules — at very small sizes this can reduce reliability. Always test a print at the actual size before full production.
Is the dotted QR code style free?
Yes. All six dot styles, all four corner styles, full color customization, logo upload, and SVG/PNG download are free. There is no account required to create and download a dotted QR code.

Why dotted QR codes are more engaging

The default square QR code has a reputation as an eyesore — something you tolerate rather than design with. Dotted and rounded styles change that. Because each module has a softer, more organic shape, the code looks intentional rather than stamped on. Scan rates on dotted QR codes are consistently higher on printed materials because people are more willing to interact with something that looks designed.

Scan reliability of dotted styles

Modern QR decoders — including Apple's built-in camera reader and Google Lens — identify the three corner markers first, then use them as anchors to decode the inner module grid. The shape of individual modules has minimal effect on decode accuracy because the algorithm samples luminance at the center of each module cell, not at its edges. This is why dots, pills, and rounded styles all achieve the same decode rate as squares when the contrast is correct.

Small-size considerations

Below 1 inch (2.5 cm), the whitespace between dotted modules starts to close up due to print dot gain — the slight ink spread that happens on paper. At very small sizes, switch to Rounded or Square dots. Use the QR Maker export preview at 100% print size to check before committing to a full print run.
