Why size matters
A QR code that is too small simply will not scan reliably. Camera apps need to be able to distinguish the individual modules (the small squares that make up the code) at a normal scanning distance. Too small means too much blur, too much camera shake, and too many failed scans.
The minimum size rule
The absolute minimum for reliable scanning is 2 cm × 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) when viewed and scanned from approximately 20 cm (8 inches) away. This is the "reading distance" — how close someone holds their phone to scan.
The general rule: the minimum QR code size = 1/10th of the scanning distance. So if you expect people to scan from 30 cm away, your code should be at least 3 cm × 3 cm.
