What Is the Best QR Code Size for Printing? A Complete Guide

Print too small and your QR code will not scan. Print too large and it looks out of place. Here is exactly how to size QR codes for every print format.

Why size matters

A QR code that is too small simply will not scan reliably. Camera apps need to be able to distinguish the individual modules (the small squares that make up the code) at a normal scanning distance. Too small means too much blur, too much camera shake, and too many failed scans.

The minimum size rule

The absolute minimum for reliable scanning is 2 cm × 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) when viewed and scanned from approximately 20 cm (8 inches) away. This is the "reading distance" — how close someone holds their phone to scan.

The general rule: the minimum QR code size = 1/10th of the scanning distance. So if you expect people to scan from 30 cm away, your code should be at least 3 cm × 3 cm.
